About Water Filter Systems

A good quality home water filter system should remove the following common water contaminants:

Lead

Lead is highly toxic to the human body and many older homes still use lead pipes for their plumbing. Pregnant women, and breast (or bottle-fed) infants are at greatest risk. High blood levels of lead have also been shown to affect children developmentally in terms of intelligence, growth and behaviour.

Copper

Copper is a heavy metal, but also an essential trace element for humans. However high doses of copper (above 50mg/kg body weight) can be lethal. The concentration of copper in tap water can rise substantially when water with a low pH and hardness remains in stagnant contact with copper pipes and fittings.

Chlorine

Chlorination of drinking water supplies is often carried out to kill and prevent bacteria outbreak. Chlorine is a disinfectant and has an unpleasant taste and smell.

A recent study linked a by-product (Trihalomethanes or "THM's") to a significant increase in the risk of miscarriage in pregnant women who drank five or more glasses of unfiltered tap water a day[1].

Giardia Lamblia

Giardia Lamblia is a one celled, microscopic parasite that lives in the intestines of people and animals and is the most common waterborne parasite. It is responsible for an illness known as giardiasis. It causes severe stomach cramping, fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

Cryptosporidium Parvum

Cryptosporidium is one of the most resistant parasites to water chemical treatments. The parasite only responds to chlorine in high doses. The only effective way to remove Cryptosporidium is by filtration.

Aluminium

Aluminium is often used as precipitating agent in some water treatment plants. If not removed properly, residual levels remain in drinking water. High levels of aluminium in the drinking water can have a toxic effect on the human body.
