Business & Office Overview
Running an eco and green office is more than simply recycling photocopy paper and installing energy efficient light globes.
Computers, copiers, printers and faxes consume a huge amount of energy and materials when they are manufactured and whilst being used. They also create heat that causes air conditioning systems to work harder. Products with EnergyStar ratings or a 'sleep mode' can reduce power consumption.
Improve indoor air quality and reduce electromagnetic fields by purchasing products that contain low or no formaldehyde, trichloroethylene or benzene. These toxic chemicals outgas and reduce the quality of air. Indoor plants and electronic ionisers, along with good ventilation, can also help prevent indoor air quality from becoming 'stale' and unhealthy.
Use cleaning agents that are non-toxic, biodegradable and contain no volatile organic compounds.
Recycled paper not only saves trees, but every tonne of recycled paper saves 42,000kwh of electricity, 26,000 litres of water and 27kgs of air pollutants. [1]
Reuse or recycle all waste, and implement a 'green print' purchasing policy regarding stationery. An environmentally conscious printer uses:
- Paper that is recycled, and contains a high post-consumer content and/or is chlorine free
- 100% vegetable based inks, and
- Safe, vegetable based cleaning agents (VCA's).
